Dog Training and Behaviour Consulting in Central Victoria

Need help with teaching your puppy or dog? Having trouble understanding each other? Dogspeak can help you understand each other’s language.

Dogspeak is focused on helping you build a great relationship with your dog and teaching you how to effectively communicate with your canine friend and family member. Dogspeak can help set you on the right track with your new puppy or newly acquired older dog. Taking the time and putting in the effort to teach your dog how you would like him to behave is imperative for both you and your dog. Regardless of a dog’s breed, size, or age,  s/he can benefit from good fair leadership, household rules, exercise, and training. Whether your training goal is to have a highly trained obedience competitor or a dog that is a well-mannered family member, the fundamental ingredient for success is the same. The bond between you and your  dog is the starting point to training success.Teaching basic skills by positive training can begin in early puppyhood and continue as the dog matures. While your dog does not need to learn a large number of tricks or how to heel perfectly, he does need to know the fundamentals: how to sit, say please, walk on a lead, have good manners in the house, greet people respectfully, and settle himself on a mat or in a crate.A well trained dog will be welcomed into your world, you will have

  • A dog who can happily accept visitors into your home.
  • Can be taken anywhere into public areas with you.
  • Can sometimes be left alone without panicking.
  • Can join in family activities.
  • Is welcomed indoors and can settle quietly when necessary.

In short, a dog who is truly a family member and not just a dog, who is left in the back yard because you haven’t taken the time to teach them how to behave.

about me

Dogspeak is Tricia Dunlop

As long as I can remember there have always been dogs in my life. Over the last 12 years though, dogs have become more than ‘just the dogs’.

My Border Collie, Byron was the dog who started me on this journey of discovery. I discovered that there was so much more to dogs than I had ever imagined. Byron was the dog I got because I wanted to participate in the sport of agility with him. It never occurred to me that it may not be what he wanted or what he was even able to give me. I had never considered that my dog even had such a thing as a choice.

When Byron started showing signs of being aggressive when around other dogs, off we went to the local obedience dog club. I was immediately told that I needed to be tough and show him I was the boss and in control. Being tough and in control I soon found out, meant that I needed to physically punish him for this behaviour and the instructor quickly gave me a demonstration on how I should accomplish this. Before I could blink, Byron was walked into the face of another dog, promptly growled and was then flipped 360 degrees, landing on his back. I was told by the instructor with a smug look on his face, “that is how it’s done”.  The smug look was quickly wiped from his face, when Byron scrambled to his feet and promptly peed on his leg.

That day as I took my beautiful boy home, I decided that I would never allow anyone to ever get the chance to treat my dog that way again. I also made a decision that was to change my life. I would find out for myself how I could help Byron. My journey into the world of dogs and educating myself about the science of animal learning had begun.

Fast forward to the present and my time is spent helping others to see how they can enjoy the relationship with their dogs and teach them the behaviours they want, continuing my never-ending quest for knowledge and training for and participating in the sport of agility.

Services Offered

Currently these are the services that I offer. At the moment there are no group classes offered except for the Puppy Kindergarten classes held at Greg McIntyre Veterinary Clinic in Kyneton.
I find that lots of people and certainly some dogs, are not at all comfortable with large group classes and prefer the familiarity of their own surroundings, making it more conducive to learning. Certainly behaviour issues are best dealt with in the dogs own home rather than taking them into, what can sometimes be, a very scary environment.
I make every effort to work with you and your dog, together coming up with a plan that will help you to achieve what you want for your dog. Working in your own home means that I can be flexible – you are not locked into a time frame that doesn’t always suit you.
